Readily available during the mid 1960's in England were Derek Washington's bells. Until these were produced and sold the falconry community used bells from Lahore in Pakistan. They were thin with a load ring and they were cheap which is just as well as they soon wore out. Derek Washington was one of the first home grown bell makers using quality brass to produce a superior bell. His design was for a small bell with the unusual hole for a falconry bell at the end of the sound slit. They had an excellent sound, lasted for years and their small size meant they were not cumbersome for the hawk to wear.
