Comments of Peter Barry Devers on FB "Falconry Books"

SIR JOHN SAUNDERS SEBRIGHT. (23 May 1767 – 15 April 1846) The Dead Falconers Tour visited his splendid mansion and the lands over which he flew his hawks. We wished to pay our respects at his grave but, alas, we could not view it. The tomb is in the crypt of the Church of St. Leonard (dating to 1140AD) in Flamstead, Herefordshire. The parish priest said the whole crypt was filled with concrete many years ago to stabilize the medieval building. Sebright may not be able to get out of such a tomb as that on Resurrection Day. Sebright's sister is the maternal great-grandmother of Gerald Lascelles.

JOHN DAWSON DOWNES (1758-1829) was Sebright's mentor on falconry and the man to whom he dedicated his book. This gold locket has a miniature painting of Downes on one side and a lock of his hair under glass on the reverse.

About Us

The FHT aims to establish a portal for the world's falconers and other interested parties to access aspects of the sport's rich heritage by linking existing physical archives, including international private and public collections, through the medium of an electronic archive. This archive features falconry furniture, works of art, books, correspondence from leading falconers and film and photographic material for the education and interest of falconer and scholar alike. We hope that, whatever your background or interest in our sport, you may find something of value through our archive to deepen your knowledge, understanding and passion for falconry and will help us, through your support, to preserve this precious cultural heritage for future generations.
